Las señales acústicas son rasgos multidimensionales; varían de forma compleja en tiempo, frecuencia, amplitud y combinaciones de estas dimensiones. Generalmente, en biología queremos medir aspectos de las señales acústicas que varían como respuesta a los factores que predichos por nuestras hipótesis. En algunos casos inclusive carecemos de predicciones para parámetros acústicos específicos y necesitamos evaluar la similitud relativa entre las variantes de una señal en una población. Esto hace necesario una diversidad de herramientas de análisis para poder cuantificar las múltiples dimensiones en que podemos descomponer las señales.
El paquete warbleR esta diseñado para cuantificar la estructura acústica de una población de señales usando procesamiento por lotes (“batch processing”) utilizando 4 métodos principales de análisis. 2 de ellos son medidas absolutas de la estructura:

La función specan()
mide los siguientes parámetros espectrográficos relacionados a distribuciones de amplitud en tiempo y frecuencia, descriptores de los contornos frecuencia fundamental y dominante y descriptores del contenido armónico:
duración: longitud de la señal (en s)
meanfreq: frecuencia media. Promedio ponderado de la frecuencia por amplitud (en kHz)
sd: desviación estándar de la frecuencia ponderada por amplitud
freq.median: frecuencia media. La frecuencia a la que la señal se divide en dos intervalos de frecuencia de igual energía (en kHz)
freq.Q25: primer cuartil de frecuencia. La frecuencia a la que la señal se divide en dos intervalos de frecuencia de 25% y 75% de energía respectivamente (en kHz)
freq.Q75: tercer cuartil de frecuencia. La frecuencia a la que la señal se divide en dos intervalos de frecuencia de 75% y 25% de energía respectivamente (en kHz)
freq.IQR: rango de frecuencia intercuartil. Rango de frecuencia entre ‘freq.Q25’ y ‘freq.Q75’ (en kHz)
sp.ent: entropía espectral. Distribución de energía del espectro de frecuencias. Tono puro ~ 0; ruidoso ~ 1
peakf: frecuencia pico. Frecuencia con la energía más alta. Este parámetro puede tomar una cantidad de tiempo considerable para medir. Solo se genera si fast = FALSE
. Proporciona una medida más precisa de la frecuencia pico que meanpeakf
(), pero puede verse más fácilmente afectada por el ruido de fondo
meanpeakf: frecuencia pico media. Frecuencia con la energía más alta del espectro de frecuencia media (ver meanspec()
). Típicamente más consistente que peakf()
time.median: tiempo medio. El tiempo en que la señal se divide en dos intervalos de tiempo de igual energía (en s)
time.Q25: primer cuartil. El tiempo en el que la señal se divide en dos intervalos de tiempo de 25% y 75% de energía respectivamente (en s)
tiempo.Q75: tercer cuartil. El tiempo en el que la señal se divide en dos intervalos de tiempo de 75% y 25% de energía respectivamente (en s)
time.IQR: rango de tiempo intercuartil. Rango de tiempo entre ‘time.Q25’ y ‘time.Q75’ (en s)
skew (skewness): Asimetría de la distribución de amplitud
kurt (kurtosis): medida de “peakedness” del espectro
time.ent: entropía temporal. Distribución de energía en la envolvente del tiempo. Tono puro ~ 0; ruidoso ~ 1
entropía: Producto de la entropía espectral y temporal: sp.ent * time.ent
sfm: planitud espectral. Similar a sp.ent (tono puro ~ 0; ruidoso ~ 1)
meanfun: promedio de la frecuencia fundamental medida a través de la señal
minfun: frecuencia fundamental mínima medida a través de la señal
maxfun: frecuencia fundamental máxima medida a través de la señal
meandom: promedio de la frecuencia dominante medida a través de la señal
mindom: mínimo de frecuencia dominante medido a través de la señal
maxdom: máximo de la frecuencia dominante medida a través de la señal
dfrange: rango de frecuencia dominante medido a través de la señal
modindx: indice de modulación. Calculado como la diferencia absoluta acumulativa entre mediciones adyacentes de frecuencias dominantes dividida por el rango de frecuencia dominante. 1 significa que las señales no están moduladas
startdom: medición de frecuencia dominante al inicio de la señal
enddom: medición de frecuencia dominante al final de la señal
dfslope: pendiente del cambio en la frecuencia dominante a través del tiempo ((enddom-startdom) / duration). Las unidades son kHz / s
hn_freq: frecuencia media de los ‘n’ armónicos superiores (kHz). El número de armónicos se define con el argumento ‘nharmonics’
hn_width: ancho de banda promedio de los ‘n’ armónicos superiores (kHz) (ver análisis). El número de armónicos se define con el argumento ‘nharmonics’
armónicos: la cantidad de energía en armónicos superiores. El número de armónicos se define con el argumento ‘nharmonics’
HNR: relación entre armónicos y ruido (dB). Una medida del contenido armónico

Estos coeficientes fueron diseñados para descomponer los sonidos en forma similar al sistema auditivo humano, esto para facilitar el reconocimiento de voz. La idea central es comprimir los datos acústicos manteniendo solo información relevante para la detección diferencias fonéticas. El principio se refiere a la audición humana utilizando la escala logarítmica Mel cuya definición se basa en cómo el oído humano percibe la frecuencia y sonoridad (Sueur 2018). Los coeficientes ceptrales se definen literalmente como “el resultado de una transformación de coseno del logaritmo real del espectro de energía a corto plazo expresado en una escala de frecuencia de Mel”.
Las estadísticas descriptivas que se extraen de los coeficientes ceptrales son: mínimo, máximo, media, mediana, asimetría, curtosis y varianza. También devuelve la media y la varianza para la primera y la segunda derivada de los coeficientes. Estos parámetros se usan comúnmente en el procesamiento y la detección de señales acústicas (por ejemplo, Salamon et al 2014). Han sido ampliamente usados para análisis de voz humana y uso se ha extendido a la bioacústica de mamíferos, aunque también parecen ser útiles para cuantificar la estructura de señales acústicas en otros grupos.

En el análisis de series de tiempo, la distorsión de dinámica del tiempo (DTW) es uno de los algoritmos para medir la similitud entre dos secuencias temporales, que pueden variar en su ‘velocidad’. Las secuencias están ‘distorsionadas’ de forma no lineal en la dimensión temporal para determinar una medida de su similitud independiente de ciertas variaciones no lineales en la dimensión temporal.
La función dfDTW
extrae los valores de frecuencia dominantes como una serie de tiempo y luego calcula la disimilitud acústica utilizando la distorsión dinámica del tiempo. La función utiliza la función approx()
para interpolar valores entre las medidas de frecuencia dominantes:
